Surrogate motherhood: what is it?
Surrogate motherhood allows a person who cannot bring a pregnancy to completion to become a parent, thanks to a woman who accepts to take on gestation and birth for others.
The process is fairly complex and varies according to requirements. The main stages:
- making contact with the surrogate mother and any other donors involved;
- after in vitro fecundation of the egg, implanting the embryo in the womb of the bearer, who will be assisted throughout the pregnancy;
- when near birth, starting legal procedures for formal recognition of the biological parents.
Generally, specialised agencies and clinics are used for the whole process.
More details on the medical and legal procedures available can be found in the pdf files.
